I’ve been corresponding these last couple of days with my professor and mentor, who I haven’t heard from in years. It’s always good to catch up with someone close to you, but especially good to be reminded of their sharp wit and way with words. My favorite phrase:

“When there’s time, and sufficient motivation for it, I’ll
tell you what it’s like to work up from the bottom, like a fish leaping upward
from the mud-flats to lead a symphony orchestra.”

That’s got to be the most evocative phrase I’ve come across in months.
