Herbie Mann

One of my favorite jazz musicians, Herbie Mann, has died after a fight against prostate cancer. A flautist, Herbie Mann was one of the first and strongest promoters of expanding jazz to include what is now called “world music” influences. I recall my Dad talking about seeing him live at what I think was “Shelly’s Manhole” in LA in the sixties, and how Herbie Mann’s records of bossa nova turned him on to Brasilian music. This later got filtered on to me. I’m sad to hear of his passing.
