From today’s Lidovky.cz: For the first time in the history of Czech football, a woman will be at the whistle in a match – 28-year-old Dagmar Damková is debuting in the role of chief referee. She will call Saturday’s match between České Budějovice and Liberec.

This is not even an ordinary occurrence abroad; the European exception is Swiss referee Nicole Petignat, who has been calling matches in their league and recently made history as the first woman to lead a match in the UEFA Cup. A more common occurrence is for women to work as assistants.

And since we’re talking about football referees, I figure I’d use the opportunity to put up a gratuitous picture of Pier Luigi Collina.
