This is bad news indeed. The BBC’s Czech Service will be ending its broadcasts on Dec. 23; it’s chosen to focus on Arabic services.

I know a lot of expatriates in town who will be sad about the news.

For me, the BBC was a lifeline in my first days in Prague, and then as I began to learn Czech, I appreciated its shows, especially the excellent Interview BBC with Václav Moravec.

While many say that the BBC’s Internet services will take the place of the FM broadcasts, I find that hard to believe. People don’t listen to streams in their cars or in their bathtubs.
